Pompeii: The Exhibition

Thanks to a very sweet friend I was able to see Pompeii: The Exhibition at the California Science Center. Now I’ll be honest, I didn’t know much about Pompeii and most of what I know came from TV and movies, so most of it is probably wrong. There is a brief summary of what happened in Pompeii here if, like me, you need to refresh your memory. (Or just verify what is fact and what is “Hollywood.”) In the grand tradition of museum exhibits, the room was not well-lit and almost everything was behind a reflective surface so please don’t judge the photos too harshly.

At first some of the artifacts seemed almost… underwhelming until I realized why. Without knowing I was doing it, I was expecting things that looked really old. Like, really, really old. But the items on display have been so well-preserved that it’s almost hard to believe they are as old as they are. Once I figured out that my expectations were flawed each and every piece overwhelmed me for how perfect it looked.

Just a small warning, there was some erotic art on display and a few pictures of it below. I’m pretty sure there are five of you who read this website and I know you all by name and how old you are so it’s nothing inappropriate for you, but if I’m wrong and human bodies or expressions of sexuality offend you, well… consider this your warning.

The casts of the victims were more emotional than I was expecting. (I’m not sure what I was expecting to be honest.) If you don’t know anything about them there is a good explanation here of what they are and how they are made.

I was describing them to a friend later over the phone and her reaction was “how creepy!” It was creepy on one level, yes. But it was also really personal in a way I wasn’t prepared for, and almost heart-warming in a strange way. 25,000 people dead heartwarming, you say?! Yeah, I know it sounds really bad/weird. When I was standing in the room with the casts I just kept thinking that everyone who died there probably died along with everyone they’d ever known. We were told earlier in the exhibit was that within a few years of the loss of Pompeii no one remembered where it had been. These people were basically erased, completely erased. It may have taken 2,000 years but now I was standing in front someone, looking at his face in surprisingly good detail. I may not know what his name was or if he were kind, if the kid liked sports or music better, if the pregnant woman was hoping for a boy or girl, but in that moment I was seeing them and grieving them and by extension all 25,000 victims. I think every human being deserves to be mourned no matter who they are at least for a moment. It took a really long time but these people are not erased anymore. So yes, it was creepy and sad and felt good all at once.

And of course we had to visit the shuttle while we were there. (Because, ya know, I don’t have enough photos of Endeavour here and here, to say nothing of the hundreds I have that aren’t on this site!)

Photos and Excuses…

Hello, long time no talk huh? Things I don’t love in life have been getting in the way of things I do, which is really no excuse but is the truth. I literally have a list of things I want to write about, as well as a ton of photos I’ve taken and need to sort through. Instead of trying to explain (or make more excuses) why don’t you just read this article, which will explain a lot: 6 Things about Chronic Pain You Didn’t Know You Knew. (That last one on the list is so, so true!)

More to come uh… later.

My pictures recently have taken on a theme. 😉

Vacation!

What is it called when you’re on vacation but don’t leave town? A “stay-cation?” It really wasn’t my vacation, I had an out-of-town guest, but it felt like a vacation to me.

We went to Disneyland

We we lucky to have another gorgeous day when we went to the beach

We went sightseeing up in Griffith Park

We also did a lot of visiting, eating yummy food, and laughing & reminiscing. So I didn’t actually go far, but I had a great vacation regardless.

DTLA

I finally visited the observation deck on top of LA City Hall, the views were great as expected!

More photos on The Fosters!

Remember when my photos were used on an episode of The Fosters? Well, it happened again! Some of my photos were printed out and used to decorate one of the walls in a character’s bedroom. (The character that is a photography buff, the one who “took” my photos on the show.) It was a “blink and you’ll miss it” moment but I managed to grab two screencaps of the scene.

They’re small and blurry in the back, but they’re there! 🙂

This way might be easier, the pictures are the same but only my photos are in color…

This was a bench I walked past in Playa Vista

This was a movie theater facade on the set of another TV show. Kinda funny, a set from one show on the set of another show? But you would have to be a huge fan of the show (like I am) to even recognize it. Major points to you if you know what set and TV show I’m talking about! 😉

This is a funky sidewalk/wall thing. I thought it looked cool. They hung it on the wall in a different direction than it was taken, which almost makes it better. If you remember back to the first episode my pictures were used in, I was extra excited because Norman Buckley directed it. (One of the kindest and most generous people I have ever met, FYI.) Well Norman’s husband Davyd Whaley is a very talented artist, and this photo was taken just outside of his studio. I have no clue if this is a happy, ‘small world’ type coincidence or not, but either way it makes me smile.

This was an alternate shot of the same movie theater facade I talked about above.

Directly behind her head (hard to see it’s in color because it is so dark) is this picture of some lights at a fancy shopping area here in LA.

Above her head and slightly to the left of her head is this picture of some street art I walked past and loved. I discovered later that it was done by a wonderful artist named Jennifer Korsen.

So there ya go. My “15 minutes” are officially over, but the excitement will last for a long time!

Thrashbird

Today was awesome. I did a lot more standing/walking than was smart and boy am I feeling it now, but I had so much fun that I regret nothing! Friends made time in their busy schedules to take me to an art show I wanted to see and out to a favorite restaurant that sent me a free birthday coupon. It wasn’t the flashiest or most glamorous of days, but in terms of friendship and enjoyment it couldn’t be beat.

The art show was something I found out about through Instagram. A lot of great street art goes up in my neighborhood and over time I’ve found certain artists that I really enjoy. The internet and social media allows me to find them and keep track of what else they do. This particular artist goes by the name Thrashbird.

I had very little information going in to this so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but what I found was simply wonderful. The art was a mixture of images I was familiar with and things that were new to me. Best of all (and totally unexpected!) the artist was there and took the time to talk to us, share future plans, further educate us, and answer my silly questions. What a sweetheart!

Here are some low quality cell phone pics of the (most definitely high quality) art:

In the alternate universe where I am wealthy I would have bought more than one of the pieces we saw today. In this universe though I am just grateful to the friends who made it possible for me to have this experience. I’ll spend the next few days taking it easy to recover. Totally worth it!

You can find Thrashbird on Facebook here or on Instagram here.

Photos, Old and New

Photos from the last however-long-since-my-last-photo-post.

I had to pull out an old hard drive for something recently, and I took a look at some old photos that were saved on it.

I had a lovely Fourth of July!
