About Me

I have Multiple Sclerosis. I like to take pictures. Everything else is subject to change.

More in depth answer:

I’ve been writing as long as I can remember. I did it all, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, songs, even an archaic form of blogging we used to call “keeping a diary.” I never really did anything with my writing. I mean I did school assignments and such, but getting a lot of people to read what I had to say just wasn’t on my agenda. I think when I was much younger it was that fear almost all of us have, that ‘what if I get laughed at?’ that can be a powerful paralytic. At some point in life I got over it. Now my attitude is more like “if you don’t like what I write, don’t read it.” Mostly what I write is for me, I’ve never regularly put anything out there for public viewing.

So why now? Why a website? Well, a few reasons… The simplest one is because it is easier. I’m tired of having to keep track of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. Some people follow me on all of those platforms. Most don’t, most people I know follow me on one or two of them. (Some people even *gasp* don’t use any of them.) I use each of those social media platforms differently, so while some content shows up across all of them most content doesn’t. It’s just too complicated to juggle. This way I have one place to post things. I can post other places if I want to, but I don’t have to think too hard or keep track of anything. Those who want to see what I post can subscribe, those of who don’t… don’t. Simplicity.

Another reason I’m putting things on a website is that it serves as a sort of mental exercise. They say “use it or lose it” and that holds extra true with me. I’ve read in more than one place that the cognitive symptoms of MS increase after people stop working, presumably after they stop “using it.” So I’m making an extra effort to write. I’m writing all kinds of things. Some of them will end up here. Now that I have a pretty (blue!) website, it will serve as a way to keep me motivated and focused.

Ultimately though, it’s just another way of feeling connected. Across every type of social media I have friends. I want to be and feel connected to all of them. (See above re: being hard to juggle every social media website.) This feeling is especially important now. Again, if you want to keep track of me (and I want you to keep track of me) this is the easiest way to do it.

I’m not trying to “win the internet” or be the coolest kid on the (virtual) block, I’m just trying to create a place for me to share thoughts, photographs, and what I’m up to!

    Hi Jennifer,

Healthline just launched a video campaign for MS called “You’ve Got This” where individuals living with MS can record a short video to give hope and inspiration those recently diagnosed with MS.

You can visit the homepage and check out videos from the campaign here: http://www.healthline.com/health/multiple-sclerosis/youve-got-this

We will be donating $10 for every submitted campaign to the National MS Society, so the more exposure the campaign gets the more the videos we’ll receive and the more Healthline can donate to MS research, support groups, treatment programs, and more.

We would appreciate if you could help spread the word about this by sharing the You’ve Got This with friends and followers or include the campaign as a resource on your page: https://jenniferkaplan.me/2013/12/03/i-have-ms/

Please let me know if this is possible and if you have any questions. And, if you know anyone that would be interested in submitting a video, please encourage them to do so.

    Best,
